Milia Mountain Retreat is an eco-village of 13 restored 18th-century stone cottages set deep in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of western Crete, accessed by a 4-kilometre dirt track through chestnut forest from the village of Vlatos in Kissamos, Chania prefecture. The isolation is deliberate and defining: there is no mobile signal in the valley, no television in the cottages, no pool, and no connectivity beyond the essential. Electricity is generated entirely by solar panels; water flows from mountain springs on the property. The retreat sits at approximately 600 metres elevation, with the White Mountains rising sharply above to peaks exceeding 2400 metres.
The stone cottages were originally part of a working Cretan mountain village, abandoned in the mid-20th century as rural depopulation drew residents to coastal towns. Beginning in the 1990s, a dedicated team undertook the restoration of each building using traditional materials and techniques — chestnut timber for doors and furniture, local stone for walls and floors, handwoven textiles for soft furnishings. Fireplaces heat the cottages in cooler months. The 13 units range from studios to larger cottages sleeping three or four, all sharing the same philosophy of simplicity, natural materials, and connection to the mountain environment.
The communal organic restaurant is the social heart of Milia. Guests gather at shared tables for dinner, which is included in the accommodation rate. The menu draws entirely from the retreat's own farm and kitchen garden: cheeses made on the property, bread baked in stone ovens, vegetables from the terraced garden, wild herbs from the mountain, and seasonal fruit.
