Central Macedonia Weather & Climate Guide 2025

Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Central Macedonia.

Central Macedonia is Greece's largest administrative region, anchored by Thessaloniki, the country's vibrant second city and a crossroads of ancient, Byzantine, and Ottoman heritage. From the UNESCO-listed royal tombs of Vergina and Alexander the Great's birthplace at Pella to the three-fingered Halkidiki peninsula with its turquoise beaches and the monastic community of Mount Athos, the region offers an extraordinary concentration of history, culture, and natural beauty.

Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

January-February

The coldest months with frequent rain, some snow in higher elevations, many Halkidiki resorts closed, and reduced opening hours at archaeological sites. Thessaloniki remains active year-round but tourism is minimal.

Climate Overview

Central Macedonia has a transitional climate — Mediterranean along the Halkidiki coast and Thermaic Gulf, and more continental inland and at altitude. Thessaloniki experiences hot, dry summers (often 35-38°C in July-August) and cool, wet winters with occasional snowfall. The Halkidiki coastline enjoys a milder, more maritime climate moderated by the Aegean Sea, while the inland plains and Imathia can see frost and snow in winter.
