Taverna Tiffany's

Taverna Tiffany's has been feeding Thessaloniki residents since 1970 and remains one of the most cherished neighbourhood institutions in Central Macedonia's capital. Located on Iktinonou street in the central city, it operates on the principles that made the Greek taverna great: honest home-style cooking, generous portions, remarkably low prices, and a warm, unassuming atmosphere that makes everyone from market workers to professors feel equally welcome. The menu is the daily-changing repertoire of Greek comfort cooking — moussaka layered with spiced minced meat and béchamel, gemista stuffed with herbed rice and tomato, roast lamb kleftiko sealed in parchment with lemon and oregano, pastitsio baked with a nutmeg-scented meat ragu. Nothing on the menu is complicated or fashionable, and that is precisely the point. Dishes are prepared in the morning for service through the afternoon and evening, in the tradition of the Greek mageirio (cook-house). The dining room is simple and slightly worn in the best possible way — the kind of patina that only decades of daily service can produce. House wine is available by the carafe. The venue closes on Sundays, following the rhythm of the neighbourhood it serves. On weekend evenings, the combination of low prices and consistent quality means a queue outside is common after 9 PM; arriving at 7 PM or booking in advance avoids the wait.
