Glyfada Beach

Glyfada Beach stretches along the Athens Riviera in the upscale coastal suburb of Glyfada, approximately 17 kilometres south of central Athens. The beach is one of the most accessible coastal destinations in Attica, reached in around 30 minutes by the Athens tram network from central stations. The shoreline consists of pale sand with areas of fine shingle, and the sea is shallow and calm close to shore before deepening gradually. The water maintains good clarity throughout summer, running from pale aquamarine in the shallows to deeper blue further out; the beach holds Blue Flag certification most years, reflecting consistently high water quality. The beach is organized into sections managed by private beach clubs, each offering sunbed and parasol hire, beach bars with table service, and quick food options. The overall atmosphere is energetic and social, drawing families with children on weekends and a mixed crowd of young Athenians on weekday afternoons and evenings. Water sports are available along the shoreline including paddleboarding, water skiing, and pedalo hire. A lifeguard is on duty during peak summer hours. Behind the beach, the town of Glyfada offers an unusually complete range of dining and shopping options compared to other Riviera communities — including well-known restaurants, coffee bars, and designer boutiques along Metaxa Street. This combination of beach and urban amenities makes Glyfada appealing for visitors who want a full-day coastal outing rather than simply time on the sand. The beach is at its best in June before peak-season crowds arrive and in September when water temperatures remain high but visitor numbers drop. On midsummer weekends the organized sections fill quickly, so early morning arrival is recommended. A municipal coastal promenade running north and south of the main beach extends the waterfront experience beyond the central organized zone.
