Syntagma Square & Greek Parliament

Syntagma Square (Constitution Square) stands at the symbolic center of Athens, flanked on its upper level by the neoclassical Greek Parliament building and on its sides by grand hotels, bank headquarters, and luxury shops. The Parliament occupies the former Royal Palace, built in 1836–1843 for Greece's first king, Otto. In front of the Parliament's main facade, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded around the clock by the Evzones — presidential guards in traditional uniform consisting of the foustanella kilt, woolen stockings, and tsarouchia shoes with pompon tassels. The Evzones perform a precisely choreographed changing ceremony every hour on the hour; the full ceremonial version with the Presidential Guard Band takes place every Sunday at 11AM and draws substantial crowds. The square itself is a major public gathering space — a venue for demonstrations, public events, and the focal point of Athens civic life. The Syntagma Metro station beneath the square has an archaeological display case within the fare zone showing ancient remains uncovered during construction in the 1990s. The northern end of the National Garden (free to enter) begins at the square's southeast corner, offering a shaded respite from midday heat. The grand Hotel Grande Bretagne (1874) anchors the square's northwest corner. Syntagma is effectively Athens' main urban transit interchange and a natural reference point for navigating the city.
