Schwarza Valley Trail — Bad Blankenburg to Schwarzburg

The trail begins near Bad Blankenburg train station, on the Bahnhofstrasse, with the Schwarzatalbahn narrow-gauge railway providing an easy return connection from Schwarzburg at the far end, making this an ideal point-to-point rather than out-and-back hike. The 11 km route follows the Schwarza river valley south, gaining about 200 m over a mix of packed dirt riverside path and short forest track climbs, with no technical difficulty but occasional tree roots and uneven ground near the riverbank. Shade comes from streamside alder and beech trees for much of the route, with occasional open meadow stretches near the valley floor offering views up to the wooded valley sides. Landmarks include the half-timbered old town of Bad Blankenburg at the start, several river crossings on footbridges, and Schwarzburg Castle overlooking the valley near the endpoint, a strong turn-around point for those wanting a shorter there-and-back walk. The Schwarza river itself runs alongside much of the trail, though its water is not treated as potable; Bad Blankenburg and Schwarzburg both have cafes, restaurants, and shops for refreshment at either end of the hike.
