Rennsteig Stage — Wartburg to Hohe Sonne

This stage begins at the Wartburg car park above Eisenach, reached by Bus 10 or 3 from Eisenach's main train station, with paid parking available for drivers arriving via the B19. The 8 km out-and-back or point-to-point route climbs roughly 250 m in elevation through beech forest on the flank of the Thuringian Forest, following packed dirt and gravel forestry track with no scrambling or exposed sections, suitable for hikers with a moderate fitness level. Shade is near-continuous under mature beech canopy except for a short clearing near the Hohe Sonne junction, where the trail opens onto a forest meadow with views back toward the Wartburg's sandstone towers. The route follows part of the historic Rennsteig corridor and passes waymarked junctions toward the Drachenschlucht gorge, giving hikers the option to extend the walk; the Hohe Sonne forest restaurant, roughly at the trail's midpoint, is a natural turn-around point and offers food, drink, and restrooms. There are no natural water sources directly on the trail, but the restaurant at Hohe Sonne sells drinks and light meals, and Eisenach itself has full services at both ends of the bus connection. The path is well maintained and marked with the white R Rennsteig symbol as well as local blue trail markers.
