Kyffhäuser Ridge Trail — Monument to Rothenburg Castle Ruins

The trail starts at the Kyffhauserdenkmal car park, reached by bus from Bad Frankenhausen, with ample parking for drivers arriving via the B85. This 9 km ridge route climbs about 180 m across the Kyffhauser hills, following packed dirt and gravel ridge track with open, largely unshaded sections that require sun protection even on cooler days, alternating with short stretches of forest cover near the Rothenburg castle ruins. There is no technical difficulty, though the open ridge sections can be windy and exposed to sudden weather changes given the elevated, largely treeless terrain. The Kyffhauserdenkmal monument itself, a massive imperial memorial visible for kilometres, marks the trailhead and is a highlight in its own right, while the ruins of Rothenburg Castle further along the ridge serve as the main destination and natural turn-around point for a shorter out-and-back walk. Panoramic views extend across the Goldene Aue lowlands on clear days. There are no reliable water sources along the open ridge, so hikers should carry sufficient water for the full three-hour walk; the monument complex at the start has a cafe and restrooms, and Bad Frankenhausen at the trailhead's bus connection has full village amenities.
