Wattwandern from Wyk auf Foehr to the Mainland

This guided 15 km one-way mudflat crossing starts near Sandwall 27 in Wyk auf Foehr, reached by ferry from Dagebull, within the Wadden Sea National Park. As with all Wattenmeer crossings, the walk is tide-dependent and led by a certified guide, since the route crosses exposed tidal flats between Foehr and the mainland that flood at high tide; departures are scheduled 4 to 5 hours around low tide and independent crossings are not permitted. The terrain is entirely flat with no elevation gain, but the mudflat surface is soft and interspersed with tidal channels that can reach thigh height, requiring steady footing and a guide familiar with the safe route across shifting sandbanks. There is no shade at any point on the crossing, and the open flats leave walkers exposed to wind and sun for the full 4 to 5 hour duration. Landmarks along the way include the mudflat channel crossings roughly halfway across, where the guide typically calls a brief rest, and the approach to the mainland shoreline near Dagebull that marks the end of the route. No water or shelter is available on the flats, so all supplies must be carried, and a change of clothes at the mainland end is recommended since arriving muddy is normal. Return transport from the mainland side back to a starting point is arranged by the guide as part of the booking.
