Amrum Dunes and Wadden Sea Circuit

The Amrum Dunes and Wadden Sea Circuit begins at the Wittduen Faehranleger, the ferry landing on the island of Amrum, reached by ferry from Dagebull or Schluttsiel; no permit is required for the marked trail, though it runs partly within the Wadden Sea National Park and Amrum's protected dune reserve. The 14 km loop climbs under 20 m as it crosses a series of dune crests, with the surface shifting between soft sand through the dune belt, boardwalk sections protecting the most fragile dune vegetation, and firmer packed sand along the mudflat edge, offering little shade throughout since the dunes are covered mostly in marram grass and low scrub. Key landmarks include the Amrum dune reserve with its tall, wind-sculpted sand hills, the wide Kniepsand beach along the western side of the island, and a stretch of Wadden Sea mudflat on the eastern approach back toward Wittduen, which makes a natural point to pause and observe wading birds. A shorter version of about 6 km is possible by turning around at the main dune viewpoint before continuing to the mudflat section. There are no huts along the route, but the village of Norddorf partway around the loop has cafes and a shop for water and supplies. The dune boardwalks can be narrow, so passing other hikers requires occasional single-file walking.
