Rock Climbing on the Teufelsmauer, near Blankenburg

The Teufelsmauer is a dramatic ridge of eroded sandstone towers running for several kilometres across the Harz foreland between Blankenburg and Thale, formed by ancient sediment layers tilted vertically by geological uplift. Sections of the formation are designated a nature reserve and closed to climbing to protect nesting birds and rare plants, but other stretches, particularly around Weddersleben and Timmenrode, have long-established, bolted climbing routes spanning a wide range of grades from beginner-friendly to technically demanding. Because access rules and seasonal nesting closures vary by section, climbing here is best arranged through a locally certified mountain guide who knows which routes are currently open and can supply harness, helmet, rope, and protection equipment; no prior climbing experience is required for a guided introductory session, though some fitness and comfort with exposure helps. A typical guided half-day covers route selection, belay instruction for beginners, and several climbs suited to the group's ability, with full-day sessions allowing a wider range of routes across different Teufelsmauer sections. The formation's unusual profile also makes it a popular subject for photography and a shorter walking detour for hikers not climbing at all.
