Cash remains common at drink stalls for speed, while card payment is increasingly accepted at food stands and craft vendors; prices are fixed and bargaining is not part of German Christmas market culture. Entry to the market is free, with the cost falling entirely on food, drink, and goods purchased. The atmosphere is festive but noticeably smaller and less crowded than the Saarbrücken market, giving Saarlouis a quieter, more local feel that draws residents of the fortress town and surrounding Saarland villages rather than large tourist crowds. Stalls ring the perimeter of the rectangular Großer Markt, with food and drink concentrated near the square's center and craft stalls positioned closer to the historic townhouses that frame the square.
