Kloster Tholey (Benedictine Abbey of St. Mauritius)

Kloster Tholey was founded in 634 AD by the Frankish nobleman Adalgisel Grimo, who established a community dedicated to Saint Mauritius, making it the oldest continuously documented monastic foundation on German soil. Archaeological excavations beneath the present church have uncovered the remains of at least four earlier church buildings on the same site, spanning Roman-era foundations through Carolingian and Romanesque phases, giving visitors a rare stratified view of over a thousand years of religious building history in one location. The current abbey church was completed around 1300 in an early Gothic style, its nave and choir reflecting the transition from Romanesque to Gothic forms common in the region during that period. The monastery passed through periods of secularization, including dissolution during the French Revolutionary period, before a Benedictine community was re-established at Tholey in 1949, restoring monastic life to the site after roughly a century and a half of interruption. Today's monks maintain the working abbey alongside the historic church, and the crypt beneath the choir preserves excavated foundation walls from the earlier building phases, viewable on guided visits. The abbey's library and archives, though reduced by wartime losses, retain material documenting the monastery's medieval land holdings across the Saar region. Tholey's church also houses relics associated with its founder and has functioned as a regional pilgrimage stop since the medieval period.
