Trier, Germany's oldest city, lies about 95 km northeast of Saarbrücken in Rhineland-Palatinate, reachable in roughly 1 hour 10 minutes via direct Regionalexpress trains from Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof, or by car in about an hour via the A1/B51. Founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum, the city preserves the most extensive Roman remains north of the Alps, anchored by the black sandstone Porta Nigra city gate, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 along with the rest of Trier's Roman monuments. A one-day itinerary typically begins at the Porta Nigra in the morning, continuing on foot through the pedestrian old town to the Hauptmarkt square and the twin-towered Trier Cathedral (Trierer Dom), Germany's oldest cathedral, paired with the adjoining Liebfrauenkirche. Late morning suits the Rheinisches Landesmuseum for Roman artifacts, or the ruined Kaiserthermen imperial baths a short walk south.
