Strasbourg lies about 130 km southeast of Saarbrücken in France's Grand Est region, reached in roughly 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours by regional and TGV train connections, typically with one change, or by car in about 1 hour 45 minutes via the A4 motorway through Sarreguemines and Haguenau. The half-timbered Petite France quarter, laced with canals and locks from the city's former tanning district, sits alongside the pink sandstone Strasbourg Cathedral, whose astronomical clock and platform views over the Rhine plain are highlights of the Gothic old town. A one-day itinerary can begin with an early-morning climb of the cathedral's platform before crowds build, followed by a walk through Petite France and along the Ill river covered bridges. Midday suits the Place Kleber and the surrounding pedestrian shopping streets for lunch, with Alsatian tarte flambee or choucroute widely available in the old town's winstubs. Afternoon can be spent either in the European Parliament quarter, a short tram ride from the center, or on a boat tour of the canals that circle the old town.
