Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife (Treetop Walkway)

The Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife is a 1,250-metre elevated walkway that winds through the canopy of native mixed deciduous forest above the Saar river loop near Mettlach-Orscholz, climbing gradually to a 42-metre viewing tower overlooking the Saarschleife. The route is built as a continuous accessible ramp rather than stairs, so the ascent is gradual, and it passes a series of educational stations explaining the forest ecology, tree species and wildlife of the surrounding Saar-Hunsrück nature park. At the far end, the tower's spiral ramp leads up through the treetops to an open platform with a panoramic view over the river bend that complements, from a different angle and height, the view from the nearby Cloef ground-level platform. A full walk from entrance to tower and back takes roughly one to one and a half hours at an unhurried pace, longer for families stopping at each educational station. The walkway is busiest around midday and on summer weekends and school holidays, when queues can form at the entrance turnstiles and at the tower itself; visiting on a weekday morning, or in the evening during the Thursday late-opening hours, offers a noticeably quieter experience. Because the path runs through the tree canopy rather than at ground level, it offers a different perspective on the forest than typical woodland trails, with views down into the canopy as well as out toward the river loop. The site adjoins the Cloef-Atrium car park, making it easy to combine with the classic Saarschleife viewpoint on the same visit.
