Goods sold are dominated by fresh produce, cut flowers, cheese, and sausages from producers across Rheinhessen, alongside bottled wine sold directly by regional vineyards, making it a genuine working market for residents rather than a tourist-oriented bazaar. Vendors are almost exclusively local growers and winemakers rather than resellers of imported goods, and prices are posted rather than negotiated, in keeping with German market convention; cash is still preferred at most stands, with card acceptance limited to the larger stalls. There is no tax-refund process for market purchases since these are consumables intended for local use. The atmosphere is lively and functional, busiest on Saturday mornings when the whole square fills with shoppers, and food stalls selling bread rolls, coffee, and regional snacks operate alongside the produce vendors for those eating on the move. Stalls are arranged in rows radiating from the cathedral steps, with wine and flower vendors typically clustered nearer Markt and fresh produce concentrated closer to Domplatz itself. The market has run in some form since the medieval era and remains one of the most reliable places in Mainz to buy Rheinhessen wine directly from the producing estate rather than through a retailer.
