Duerkheimer Wurstmarkt

The Duerkheimer Wurstmarkt takes over the Wurstmarktplatz festival grounds in Bad Durkheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, for nine days spanning the second and third weekends of September, and despite the sausage-market name it is billed as the world's largest wine festival, with a history stretching back more than 600 years. Goods sold are centered on regional Pfalz wine, poured by the glass or sold by the bottle at roughly 300 dedicated wine stands, supplemented by 36 pushcart stalls selling festival food such as roast half-chickens, sausages, and pretzels rather than souvenirs or trinkets. Vendors are largely local Pfalz wineries and long-running festival concessionaires, so the goods on offer are authentic regional products rather than mass-produced festival merchandise. Payment at most stands is by cash, and pricing is fixed rather than negotiated, consistent with German festival and market custom; there is no tax-refund scheme, since wine and food are consumed on site. The atmosphere is that of a large open-air wine village, with communal bench seating (Weinlauben) encouraging shared tables among strangers, live music, and a festive crowd that swells considerably on weekend evenings. The grounds are organized around large wine tents and open stands ringing a central fairground area that also includes classic funfair rides, with the most established winery stands typically found along the main promenade closest to the entrance.
