Speyer Cathedral and the Imperial Crypt

Speyer lies on the west bank of the Rhine about 85 km from Mainz, reached by regional train in roughly 1 to 1.25 hours, usually changing at Ludwigshafen Hbf (EUR 18-26 one way); from Ludwigshafen alone the journey is a direct 20-25 minutes. The UNESCO-listed Speyer Cathedral, the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world, is a 10-minute walk from the station along the pedestrianised Maximilianstrasse, and houses the imperial crypt of Salian and Hohenstaufen emperors beneath its vast nave, accessible for around EUR 3.50. A one-day itinerary can begin with the cathedral nave and crypt in the morning, continue along Maximilianstrasse to the Historical Museum of the Palatinate for the region's Roman and medieval collections, then spend the afternoon at the Technik Museum Speyer on the town's edge, known for its aircraft, submarine and space exhibits, before returning to the station via the old town's cafes and bakeries. Restaurants and bakeries line Maximilianstrasse between the cathedral and the Altportel gate, offering a convenient lunch stop midway through the day, while the cathedral gardens (Domgarten) provide a quiet rest spot with Rhine views. Both the cathedral and the main museums are indoors, so the trip works year-round, though the Domgarten and old town streets are most pleasant April through October. Arriving in the morning leaves enough time to combine the cathedral with either the Historical Museum or the larger Technik Museum without an overly rushed schedule.
