Deutsche Weinstrasse - Neustadt, Deidesheim and Bad Durkheim

The Deutsche Weinstrasse runs about 100 km through the Palatinate's rolling vineyards, and its northern Mittelhaardt stretch - Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, Deidesheim and the spa town of Bad Durkheim - is reached from Ludwigshafen Hbf by regional train to Neustadt (Weinstr) Hbf in 25-35 minutes (EUR 8-14 one way), with onward VRN buses and short train hops to the neighbouring wine villages. Neustadt anchors the day with its market square and Gothic Stiftskirche, Deidesheim (about 15 minutes away by VRN bus) offers one of the region's most concentrated clusters of top Riesling estates around its own half-timbered Marktplatz, and Bad Durkheim (about 10 minutes by train from Neustadt) combines a spa-town promenade with the Durkheimer Riesenfass, the world's largest wine barrel, now housing a restaurant. A one-day itinerary can start in Neustadt for the morning market and old town, move on to Deidesheim around midday for a wine estate visit or tasting, and finish the afternoon in Bad Durkheim with a walk along the spa gardens and a stop at the Riesenfass. Food and rest stops include wine-village Strausswirtschaften seasonal taverns in Deidesheim serving Saumagen and local Riesling, and the Kurpark cafes in Bad Durkheim for a break between the wine stops. The best season runs May through October, with September and October bringing the grape harvest and the region's wine festivals, when villages are liveliest but weekend trains and buses run fuller than midweek.
