Schengen and Remich - Across the Luxembourg Border

Schengen, the small Luxembourg wine village that gave its name to Europe's passport-free travel zone, sits directly across the Moselle from the German border at Perl, reached from Trier Hbf by regional train to Perl in 25-40 minutes (EUR 8-12 one way), the last stop in Germany, followed by a short walk across the Moselle bridge into Luxembourg. The European Museum Schengen, on the Luxembourg riverbank, explains the 1985 treaty signed on a boat moored at the confluence point, and the village itself has a small wine-tasting cellar and riverside walking paths. A one-day itinerary can begin with the museum in the morning, then follow the riverside path or a short onward bus a few kilometers to Remich, a Luxembourg town known for its riverside promenade and Cremant sparkling wine houses, before returning to Perl and the train back to Trier in the afternoon. Alternatively, a seasonal Moselle river cruise runs directly from Trier's Stadthafen Zurlauben to Schengen and Remich, offering a scenic one-way option (around EUR 15-25) that avoids the walk across the border bridge. Food and rest stops include riverside cafes in both Schengen and Remich serving Cremant and Luxembourgish specialties, with picnic spots along the promenade between the two villages. The best season runs May through September, when the river cruise operates and the riverside terraces in both villages are at their busiest and most pleasant.
