Worms Cathedral (Dom St. Peter)

Worms Cathedral crowns the highest point of the old town, its High Romanesque form largely complete by 1181 and distinguished by two round towers and two octagonal domes rather than a single dominant spire, giving the building a more balanced, fortress-like silhouette than many German cathedrals. Inside, the nave leads to a choir at both the east and west ends, an unusual double-apse design shared with a handful of other Rhineland cathedrals, meant to separate liturgical functions and lend equal weight to both ends of the building. The cathedral is most closely associated with the 1521 Diet of Worms, the imperial assembly at which Martin Luther refused to recant his writings before Emperor Charles V, a confrontation that reshaped the course of the Reformation; the nearby Luther Memorial commemorates the event with statues of key reformers. Carved choir stalls, a Baroque high altar by Balthasar Neumann, and Romanesque relief work around the portals reward a slower look at the details rather than a quick pass through. A visit to the nave takes 30-45 minutes, and because admission is free, there is no ticketing bottleneck to plan around. The cathedral closes to sightseeing on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings for services, so weekday mornings before tour groups arrive give the most unhurried access. The west end's twin towers, viewed from Domplatz, give the clearest sense of the building's scale and its dual-apse layout from outside.
