St. Stephan's Church (Chagall Windows)

St. Stephan's Church sits on a hilltop in Mainz, its Gothic structure largely unremarkable on its own but transformed by nine deep-blue stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall between 1978 and 1985, the only work by the artist installed in Germany. Chagall, then in his nineties, took on the commission as a deliberate gesture of reconciliation between Judaism and Christianity in the decades following the Holocaust, and the windows draw on Old Testament imagery rendered in his instantly recognizable style, with floating figures and richly layered blue tones that shift in intensity as daylight moves across them through the day. The windows fill the choir and side chapels, and the effect is strongest at midday, when direct sunlight passes through the glass and washes the stone interior in blue light, a phenomenon many visitors specifically time their visit around. The church draws roughly 200,000 visitors a year, a remarkable figure for a parish church, reflecting the international reputation the windows have earned among both art and religious travelers. Entry is free, and the church is typically open daily during daylight hours, though Sunday and holiday hours vary due to services. A visit to see the windows and sit with the space takes 30-45 minutes. The uphill walk of about 10 minutes from central Mainz and the cathedral adds a further architectural contrast, moving from the heavier Romanesque cathedral to the luminous, modern glasswork at St. Stephan's.
