Curry 36 on Mehringdamm in Berlin-Kreuzberg is one of the city's most venerated currywurst stands, operating since 1981 and drawing a loyal following of locals, night workers, and food-curious visitors at nearly all hours. The stand sits directly beside the Mehringdamm U-Bahn station, making it easy to reach from across the city. Currywurst — Berlin's defining street food — consists of grilled bratwurst sliced into rounds and covered in a spiced ketchup sauce dusted with curry powder. Curry 36 serves its version with exceptional consistency: the sausages are good quality, the sauce has a well-balanced sweetness and heat, and the portions come with or without casing (mit oder ohne Darm). French fries are the standard accompaniment. The stand is open until 5 AM on Friday and Saturday nights, which makes it a natural stop after concerts, clubs, or late theatre.
