Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Germany's northeastern coastal state, stretching along the Baltic Sea from the port city of Rostock to the Polish border. Its official capital is the small lake-island city of Schwerin, home to the fairy-tale Schwerin Castle, while Rostock remains the largest city and gateway to the beach district of Warnemünde. The state holds two UNESCO World Heritage Old Towns, the brick-Gothic merchant cities of Stralsund and Wismar, alongside the chalk cliffs of Rügen island's Jasmund National Park and the historic Kaiserbäder imperial spa resorts of Usedom island. Inland, Müritz National Park anchors the so-called Land of a Thousand Lakes, the largest connected lake district in Germany.

Foodie tips
Get more out of every meal.
Smoked fish is priced by weight at harbor kiosks - ask for a small portion (100-150g) if you just want to taste rather than a full meal
Fischbrötchen are eaten standing at a railing, not sitting down - napkins are essential
Restaurants in Rügen and Usedom's resort towns get very busy in July and August; reserve ahead or eat outside peak lunch and dinner hours
Soleier (pickled eggs) are a bar snack, not a meal - order alongside a beer rather than as a standalone dish
Cash is still preferred at small harbor kiosks and fish shacks, even though card payment is now common at sit-down restaurants
