Außenalster Reflections

At sunrise, before wind picks up across the open water, the Aussenalster's surface turns glassy and mirrors the grand villas and church spires lining the Alsterufer shore, along with the sailing boats moored just offshore -- the strongest compositions place a moored boat or a jetty in the foreground with the reflected skyline filling the rest of the frame. The lake faces roughly east-west depending on the shooting position, so sunrise light comes in low and warm, skimming across the water and picking out ripples if any breeze has started, while a fully still morning gives an almost perfect mirror image with no need to wait for wind to die down. The calmest water and clearest reflections come in the very early morning, especially in the warmer months from May to September when overnight air is stillest; by mid-morning, thermal breezes off the city typically break the surface into small waves. Overcast mornings work almost as well as clear ones for this shot, since the emphasis is on the water's stillness and the reflected shapes rather than a colorful sky. The Alsterufer promenade draws joggers and dog walkers at dawn but very few other photographers, so there is no competition for a shooting position along the shoreline. The path is public parkland, free and open at all hours, with tripods permitted as long as they do not block the running and walking path. Drone flights are restricted over this part of central Hamburg under general city airspace rules, and a permit would be required for any drone use here.
