Öjendorfer See Loop

The Öjendorfer See Loop is a 5.6-kilometer flat circuit around one of Hamburg's largest recreational lakes, located in the Billstedt district in the east of the city. Access is by U-Bahn U3 to Legienstraße followed by bus 25, or by car with limited street parking near the main entrances, with no fee required. The lake itself was formed from a former gravel pit and the surrounding loop is entirely flat, following paved and gravel paths with no elevation gain and no technical difficulty, making it suitable for walkers of any fitness level. Shade is intermittent, with tree-lined stretches on the western shore and more open parkland on the eastern side. The route passes designated swimming areas with supervised grassy lawns, a bird sanctuary corner on the lake's northern edge that draws waterfowl and occasional migratory species, and broad open parkland used for picnics and informal sports. There are no huts or technical turnaround points, as the loop forms a closed circuit; walkers can shorten the route at several path junctions that cut across the interior. Kiosks near the main swimming beach offer food and drink in season, though the quieter eastern shore has fewer facilities, so carrying water is advisable away from the main beach. The lake's calm water and open surroundings make it popular for a range of activities beyond walking, including swimming, rowing, and birdwatching, particularly in the warmer months. The full loop takes about 1.5 hours at a relaxed pace.
