Landungsbrücken

The Landungsbrücken are a row of floating pontoon piers built between 1907 and 1910 along the St. Pauli waterfront, designed to rise and fall with the Elbe's tidal range while keeping ferries and harbor cruise boats level with the shore. The pier building itself, with its domed entrance towers, has become a landmark in its own right, and the piers remain the main departure point for harbor boat tours, Elbe ferries, and excursions toward the container terminals and shipyards downstream. Standing along the piers gives an almost constant view of harbor traffic, from container ships and cruise liners to historic vessels moored nearby, including the Rickmer Rickmers museum ship. The onshore promenade behind the piers is lined with seafood stalls, snack kiosks, and terraces where visitors can watch the water while eating. A stop of 30 to 60 minutes covers the piers and promenade, while joining one of the roughly hour-long harbor cruises turns it into a half-day activity that includes close passes by the port's working docks. Late afternoon into early evening is the most rewarding time to visit, when ship traffic is often at its heaviest and the light over the Elbe turns golden ahead of sunset; the area is busiest around midday when tour groups and cruise excursions converge at the piers.
