International Maritime Museum Hamburg

The International Maritime Museum Hamburg occupies a restored Speicherstadt warehouse known as the Kaispeicher B, one of the oldest surviving buildings in the district, and spans ten exhibition floors covering roughly 3,000 years of maritime history. The core of the museum comes from a single private collection assembled over decades by Peter Tamm, including thousands of ship models, uniforms, medals, paintings, and an extensive archive of ship's log books and navigational instruments. Exhibits move from ancient seafaring and the age of sail up through steamships, naval warfare, and modern container shipping, with entire floors dedicated to specific eras or themes such as shipbuilding and naval history. A thorough visit through all ten floors takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, as each level holds dense, detailed displays that reward slower browsing rather than a quick pass-through. Because the building's original warehouse structure has been preserved, the museum retains narrow stairwells and low beams typical of Speicherstadt architecture alongside a modern elevator connecting all floors. Weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit, before school groups and tour parties that tend to arrive around midday.
