Built between the 13th and 15th centuries in the border city of Frankfurt (Oder), St. Marien became one of the largest brick-Gothic churches in the region before being gutted by fire during the final battles of 1945 and left as a roofless ruin for decades under East German rule. Its rarest treasure, a set of 14th-century stained-glass windows depicting biblical and secular scenes, had been removed for safekeeping before the wartime destruction and spent decades in Soviet and later Russian storage before being negotiated back to Germany and reinstalled between 2002 and 2008, a restoration considered one of the more significant recoveries of German medieval art after the Cold War.
