A memorial and museum on the escarpment east of Berlin where Soviet and German forces fought one of the war's final large-scale battles in April 1945.
The Seelow Heights, a low ridge overlooking the Oder river floodplain about 80 km east of Berlin, was the site of a massive Soviet offensive beginning 16 April 1945, intended to break through the last major German defensive line before Berlin. Over four days of intense fighting, Soviet forces suffered heavy casualties overcoming German positions dug into the escarpment, in one of the costliest single battles of the war's final weeks in terms of both military and civilian losses in the surrounding villages. A Soviet war memorial was erected on the heights in 1945, and a museum, expanded and reoriented after German reunification to present a more balanced historical account, now stands nearby with preserved trench lines, weapons, and exhibits on the battle and the broader final collapse of the Eastern Front.
