Spreewald Canoeing — Lübben Kahnhafen

Lübben's Kahnhafen, at the northern edge of the Spreewald biosphere reserve, is a quieter alternative to the busier harbours at Lübbenau and Burg, giving paddlers direct access to a wide, largely uncrowded canal network leading toward the Unterspreewald. The activity here is self-guided canoeing and kayaking rather than led punt tours, suited to visitors with basic fitness and no prior paddling experience; children can join as passengers in a two-person canoe, though solo kayaking is best suited to those roughly 10 and older who can swim. Bootsverleih Lehmann, the harbour's rental operator, provides the canoe or kayak, paddles, and life jackets as standard with every hire, so visitors need only bring sun protection, water, and suitable footwear for wet boat landings. The operator has hired boats from this harbour for many years and gives paddlers a short safety talk covering the main routes, water depth, and a contact number to call if help is needed along the canals; because the Unterspreewald channels are wider and less signposted than the southern Spreewald, staying on the marked main routes is advised for anyone paddling without a guide. No formal rescue service patrols the canals, so life jackets should be worn by non-swimmers and children at all times. The best season for paddling runs from June to September, when water levels are stable and the canal-side alder forest is fullest; visitors should avoid periods of heavy rain, when water can rise and currents strengthen on the connecting channels, and note that some canoe routes become difficult to navigate in the low water levels of late autumn.
