Havelland Cycle Route — Potsdam to Werder (Havel)

The Havelland-Radweg is a signed, flat cycling route that follows the Havel river's lake chain west from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof to the half-timbered old town of Werder (Havel), a roughly 20 km one-way ride suitable for casual cyclists rather than a technical mountain-bike activity. No particular fitness or cycling skill is required beyond comfort riding on paved and packed-gravel paths for two to three hours; the route has no age limit, and families with older children on their own bikes complete it regularly, though very young children are usually carried in trailers or child seats rather than riding solo. Cyclists can bring their own bicycle or hire one at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, where standard and e-bike hire is available; helmets are recommended but not supplied by rental outlets and should be brought or requested separately. Because the route is self-guided rather than led by an operator, there is no formal safety briefing, though the path is well signed throughout and stays close to towns and villages, so mobile phone reception and help are rarely far away in the event of a breakdown or puncture. The route is rideable year-round, but conditions are most comfortable from May to September, when daylight hours are longest and towpath surfaces are driest; cyclists should avoid the route after heavy rain, when some unpaved sections near the Templiner See and Schwielowsee can become muddy, and avoid midwinter riding, when short daylight hours limit the return journey by bike or train.
