Fläming-Skate and Cycle Route — Bad Belzig

The Fläming-Skate network is a 230 km network of purpose-built asphalt paths for cycling and inline skating through the rolling glacial hills of the Hoher Fläming Nature Park south of Potsdam, with Bad Belzig's railway station serving as a common starting point. The smooth, car-free surface was built specifically for skating as well as cycling, so no special fitness is required for shorter loops, though the region's low hills mean stretches with a moderate, sustained gradient that inline skaters with limited experience may find tiring; cyclists of most ability levels can manage half-day sections comfortably. The activity is self-guided, and visitors bring their own bicycle or inline skates or hire them in Bad Belzig, where local shops offer both; helmets are recommended for skaters in particular, given the paved surface and occasional descents. Because there is no tour operator or briefing involved, cyclists and skaters should study the network's colour-coded route signs before setting off, and skaters unfamiliar with the terrain are advised to start on a flatter loop near Bad Belzig itself rather than the hillier southern sections. The route passes Bad Belzig's medieval Burg Eisenhardt castle and the Sternenpark Fläming dark-sky reserve, one of Germany's darkest night skies, making an early-evening or overnight stop worthwhile for stargazing. The best season runs from May to September, when the asphalt surface is dry and daylight hours are long; visitors should avoid the paths after rain or frost, when the surface can become slick, and note that some multi-day sections have limited services in winter.
