About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a university city of about 160,000 residents on the Neckar river in the Rhine-Neckar region of south-western Germany. The red-sandstone Schloss Heidelberg ruin rises above the Altstadt, whose pedestrian Hauptstraße runs for about 1.6 km from the Bismarckplatz to the Karlstor. The Alte Brücke (Karl-Theodor-Brücke) crosses the Neckar to the Neuenheim bank, where the Philosophenweg climbs the Heiligenberg for views of the castle and old town. Heidelberg University, founded in 1386, is the oldest in Germany and shapes the city with its student pubs, the Studentenkarzer and the Universitätsbibliothek. The Bergbahn funicular links the Kornmarkt with the castle, Molkenkur and the Königstuhl summit. Districts include the Altstadt, Bergheim, Neuenheim, Handschuhsheim, Kirchheim and the Weststadt. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is about 90 km north and reachable by train in roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, and Speyer, Schwetzingen, Mannheim and the Neckar castles are easy day trips.

Essential travel tips

  • Check the HeidelbergCARD at heidelberg-marketing.de for transport, castle and museum discounts; compare against single tickets for a short stay
  • Buy the castle ticket together with the Bergbahn funicular at the Kornmarkt station; it covers the courtyard, the Great Vat and the German Pharmacy Museum
  • Walk up to the castle via the Burgweg for views, then take the funicular on the way to the Königstuhl
  • Most shops close on Sunday and public holidays; the supermarkets and bakeries in Hauptbahnhof stay open longer
  • Try the Heidelberger Studentenkuss chocolate (Knösel, Haspelgasse 20) and traditional Kurpfalz dishes such as Saumagen; Neckar valley and Bergstraße wines suit wine drinkers
  • Book hotels early for the Advent season, summer weekends and the castle illumination nights

Safety information

INFO

Keep phones and wallets in zipped inner pockets on the Hauptstraße, at the Marktplatz and at the Bergbahn station on Kornmarkt, where crowds are densest.

INFO

Lock bicycles with two locks to fixed objects; bicycle theft is a common crime in a student city.

INFO

Genuine police officers do not need to inspect cash on the street; if two men in plain clothes ask to check a wallet, ask for a uniformed patrol or call 110.

INFO

Check EUR 100 notes received as change, as counterfeit notes have been passed at Altstadt shops and the market.

INFO

Late at night around the Alte Brücke, the Untere Straße bars and the Neckarwiese, stay on lit routes and keep an eye on drinks; large party crowds gather in summer.

INFO

Use the night trams and the taxi ranks at the Hauptbahnhof or Bismarckplatz rather than walking through quiet riverside paths or the Heiligenberg forest after dark.

INFO

Carry a photo ID or passport copy; German police may ask for identification.

INFO

Validate paper tickets before boarding trams and buses; inspectors check regularly and the fine for travelling without a ticket is EUR 60.

INFO

Check Neckar flood forecasts at the Baden-Württemberg flood centre (hvz.baden-wuerttemberg.de) before riverside walks after heavy rain or snowmelt.

INFO

Stay on marked paths on the Philosophenweg, Heiligenberg and Königstuhl slopes, and wear sturdy shoes on the steep, wet stone steps.
