Île-de-France is France's most populous and economically powerful region, home to Paris and an extraordinary concentration of world-class museums, châteaux, gardens, and culinary experiences. Surrounding the French capital, the region stretches across the Seine and Marne river valleys, encompassing the palaces of Versailles and Fontainebleau, the medieval streets of Provins, and vast forests perfect for cycling and hiking.
Île-de-France has a temperate oceanic climate (Köppen Cfb) with warm summers, cool winters, and moderate rainfall year-round. Paris averages 640 mm annual rainfall distributed fairly evenly across the year with no pronounced dry season. Summers are warm and pleasant (average highs 24–27°C / 75–81°F) with occasional heat waves that can push temperatures above 35°C (95°F). Winters are cool and grey (average highs 7–10°C / 45–50°F) with frost possible but snow rare. Spring and autumn are the most celebrated seasons — mild temperatures, colourful gardens, and shoulder-season visitor numbers.

Reasons: Spring (April–June) brings cherry blossoms in Parc de Sceaux, warm terrace weather, and gardens in full bloom at Versailles and Fontainebleau. Early autumn (September–October) offers golden light, harvest season in nearby Champagne, and significantly fewer crowds than July–August.
Peak Season: July–August (warmest, most expensive, and most crowded; major school holidays bring international tourists)
Shoulder Season: April–June and September–October (excellent balance of weather, open attractions, and manageable visitor numbers)

Paris Fashion Week (Haute Couture in late January, Prêt-à-Porter in late February–March) drives hotel prices up significantly. Otherwise quiet. Days begin to lengthen.
March
5–13 °C
Spring begins. Cherry blossoms appear in Parc de Sceaux by mid-to-late March. Gardens at Versailles start their first colour. Still uncrowded at major attractions.
April
8–17 °C
One of Paris's best months. Wisteria blooms across city courtyards. Versailles gardens come alive. Easter brings short-burst domestic visitors. Outdoor terraces begin filling.
May
12–21 °C
Prime Paris month. Warm days, long evenings, parks at their best. French Open (Roland Garros tennis) in late May brings sports enthusiasts. Versailles Musical Fountain shows begin.
June
15–24 °C
Summer begins. Very long days (sunset after 22:00). Paris Plages preparation begins. Major tourist season starts. Fête de la Musique on June 21 — free concerts citywide.
July
17–26 °C
Peak tourist season. Bastille Day (July 14) — fireworks over the Eiffel Tower and military parade on Champs-Élysées. Paris Plages (Seine riverbank beaches) open in mid-July. Many Parisians leave for August.
August
17–26 °C
Hottest month. Parisians on vacation mean quiet neighbourhoods but tourist sites at maximum capacity. Some smaller restaurants close for the month. Paris Plages continue.
September

Excellent month. Crowds thin significantly after the first week. Champagne harvest begins east of Paris. Paris Fashion Week (Prêt-à-Porter) in late September. European Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine) open normally closed buildings for free.
October
10–16 °C
Autumn colour arrives — Fontainebleau forest and Champs-Élysées trees turn golden. Foire du Trône funfair. Fewer tourists than summer. Excellent museum and gallery weather.
November
5–11 °C
Low season begins. Paris empties of tourists. Art season picks up at galleries. The 11 November Armistice Day ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe is a moving national event.
December
3–8 °C
Christmas season brings magical illuminations on the Champs-Élysées (from November) and Christmas markets (Tuileries, La Défense). December 31 fireworks at the Eiffel Tower and Champs-Élysées.
