Gorges de Franchard Circuit

The Gorges de Franchard Circuit is an 8 km loop through one of the most atmospheric corners of the Fontainebleau Forest, in the Seine-et-Marne department of Île-de-France. The trailhead is at the Carrefour de Franchard on the Route Ronde, approximately 5 km south-west of Fontainebleau town centre. From Paris, visitors take a Transilien train from Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau-Avon (around 40 minutes, approximately €8.70), then Bus Ligne R to Fontainebleau town centre, with the final 5 km covered by taxi or on foot along forest tracks. Free parking is available at the Carrefour de Franchard for those arriving by car. No permit is required to access the trail. The circuit covers 8 km with 90 m of ascent, making it accessible to most walkers with a moderate level of fitness. The route begins by passing through the ruined remains of the Hermitage de Franchard — a 17th-century hermit monastery set amid ancient oaks and sandstone — before climbing through the gorges themselves, a series of rocky defiles flanked by lichen-covered sandstone formations and open heathland. The surface alternates between soft sandy paths and exposed bedrock, with occasional low scrambling moves on sandstone faces that require the use of hands but no climbing equipment. Key landmarks include the Hermitage ruins, the Grand Belvédère viewpoint above the main gorge offering panoramic views across the heathland plateau, and the Chaos de Franchard — a jumble of massive boulders that inspired 19th-century Barbizon School painters including Théodore Rousseau. The circuit returns through mixed pine-birch woodland to the Carrefour de Franchard. No water sources or staffed facilities exist anywhere on the route; all food and water must be carried. The trail is marked with yellow-and-white paint blazes. IGN map sheet 2417OT covers the area and is available as a printed map in Fontainebleau or as a download on the IGN Rando app. A recommended shorter variant of approximately 5 km turns back from the Grand Belvédère, bypassing the full boulder-field loop and reducing walking time to around 1.5 hours.
