🌸 Spring

March-May

Mild and floral across most of France. Loire Valley lavender and apple blossoms, Provence wildflowers, and Paris garden café season begins. Some rain and cool days but increasingly warm from April.

Tips: Pack a light rain jacket and layers. Ideal for city visits and Provence hiking before summer heat. Versailles gardens begin musical fountain shows in April.

June-August

Hot (25-35°C on the Riviera), sunny, and extremely crowded at tourist sites. Paris empties of locals in August as France goes on vacation. French Riviera at peak glamour but beaches are packed.

Tips: Book everything months in advance. Stay hydrated in the south. Avoid Paris in August if possible — or embrace the emptied city. Early morning or evening visits to major sites.

🍂 Fall

September-November

France's finest season for most visitors — warm September weather, autumn foliage in Alsace and the Loire, grape harvest in wine regions, and far fewer crowds than summer. Gradually cooling through October and November.

Tips: September is the sweet spot: summer warmth, autumn atmosphere, 30% fewer tourists. Pack layers as evenings cool quickly. Wine harvest festivals in Burgundy and Bordeaux in September-October.

December-February

Cold and grey in Paris and northern France (3-8°C), snowy in the Alps and Pyrenees, and mild on the Riviera (12-16°C). Christmas markets in Strasbourg, Colmar, and Alsace are magical. Ski season peaks January-February.

Tips: Warm waterproof clothing essential in Paris and north. Alpine ski gear needed in the mountains. Book ski resorts months ahead. Riviera is ideal for winter sun with mild temperatures.
