Gîte de la Nouvelle (Mafate)

Gîte de la Nouvelle sits inside the village of La Nouvelle, the largest settlement in the Cirque de Mafate, one of three volcanic amphitheatres at the heart of Réunion island and reachable only on foot or by helicopter. There is no road; the approach runs along trails from Col des Bœufs or Deux-Bras, climbing through cloud forest before dropping into the cirque. The building follows the local créole gîte tradition: a simple timber-and-corrugated-roof lodge built to shelter hikers on the GR R2 and GR R1 trails, with a communal dining room that fills each evening with trekkers swapping notes on the next day's route. Rooms are basic dormitory bunks and a handful of small private rooms, with shared bathroom facilities and no air conditioning, since altitude keeps the cirque cool year-round. Half-board is the standard arrangement: a hearty créole dinner of rice, lentils, and stewed meat or vegetables, and breakfast before the day's walk, both taken family-style at long tables. There is no spa, pool, or fitness facility; the cirque's ridgelines and viewpoints are the draw. Service is informal and hiker-focused, run by local Mafatais who also act as informal guides and sources of trail information, making the gîte as much a waypoint for logistics as a place to sleep.
