Saint-Nazaire — Submarine Base and Écomusée

Saint-Nazaire lies 58 km west of Nantes at the mouth of the Loire estuary in Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, and is one of the easiest day trips from the city: the TER train from Nantes Gare Saint-Jean reaches Saint-Nazaire in about 40 minutes, with services running roughly every 30 minutes throughout the day from €6 each way. The city's defining landmark is its massive Second World War German submarine base — a reinforced concrete structure so robust it survived Allied bombing completely intact — which now houses a world-class museum including the ESPADON, a decommissioned French Navy submarine that visitors can board and explore in full. Adjacent to the submarine base, the Escal'Atlantic attraction recreates the golden age of ocean liners through full-scale reconstructions of ship cabins, first-class lounges, and engine rooms, drawing on Saint-Nazaire's century-long history as a leading shipbuilding city. The shipyard itself — one of the largest in Europe and home to vessels including the Queen Mary 2 and the world's largest cruise ships — can be seen on guided industrial heritage tours departing from the tourist office on Boulevard de la Légion d'Honneur. A morning covering the submarine and Escal'Atlantic fits neatly into a day; after lunch at one of the port-side brasseries, the afternoon can extend to the panoramic viewing terrace above the Pont de Saint-Nazaire suspension bridge or the Atlantic beaches at Ville-Martin a few kilometres west of the centre. Saint-Nazaire is a genuine year-round destination: the indoor attractions are compelling in winter, and the Carnaval de Saint-Nazaire in February draws visitors from across the region. The 15-minute walk from the station to the submarine base is flat and straightforward.
