Espace Culturel Le Carré, Château-Gontier

The Espace Culturel Le Carré is a contemporary art centre in the market town of Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne in the Mayenne department of Pays de la Loire, occupying a converted nineteenth-century building on the central Place Marchande. Founded as part of a regional policy to distribute access to contemporary art beyond major urban centres, Le Carré presents a rotating programme of exhibitions focused predominantly on photography, video art, and installation work by emerging and mid-career French and international artists. The exhibition space covers approximately 700 square metres on a single main floor, with a further project room used for smaller-scale or more experimental presentations. Entry is free throughout. The programme typically produces four to five major exhibitions per year, each running for approximately two to three months. Le Carré's curatorial approach tends toward the conceptual and politically engaged, with recurring interests in landscape, identity, and archival practice. The venue also hosts a programme of artist talks, educational workshops for local school groups, and an annual open-call for emerging artists based in Pays de la Loire. Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne itself is a small medieval market town on the Mayenne River, with an eleventh-century priory church (Saint-Jean-Baptiste-de-Geneston) and a pleasant riverside walk. The combination of Le Carré and the town's medieval character makes it a worthwhile stop for visitors travelling between Le Mans and the Loire Valley. The centre is a ten-minute walk from the train station, which connects directly to Le Mans by TER.
