Sea Kayaking — Côte de Jade Pornic

Pornic, on the southern edge of the Loire-Atlantique coast known as the Côte de Jade, offers a coastal paddling environment combining sheltered coves, rocky headlands, sea caves, and Atlantic open water within a compact stretch of shoreline. The Club Nautique de Pornic, based at Plage du Noëveillard (phone +33 2 40 82 00 44), runs guided half-day sea kayaking tours that depart from the protected sandy beach and head south along the Côte de Jade, passing beneath the town's medieval château, threading sea caves formed in schist bedrock, and reaching the tidal lagoon at the Étier du Clion. Tour guides hold Fédération Française de Canoë-Kayak (FFCK) sea certification and lead groups of no more than eight paddlers per guide, with a briefing covering paddle technique, self-rescue, and emergency radio procedures before departure.

The route from Plage du Noëveillard typically covers 8–12 kilometres over three to four hours, depending on tidal conditions and group pace. Sea kayaks and paddles are supplied; participants are advised to wear a wetsuit or paddling jacket, as Atlantic sea surface temperatures sit at 16–18 °C in June and 20–22 °C in August. Life jackets and helmets are mandatory and provided. A drybag for cameras and valuables is included with each tour. Basic swimming ability of at least 50 metres unaided is a prerequisite; no prior kayaking experience is required.

The tidal range at Pornic averages 4–5 metres, making sea-state planning essential; the Club Nautique schedules tours to depart on the rising tide, which eases the southward passage and allows a current-assisted return. Atlantic swells are typically absorbed by the headlands north of Plage du Noëveillard, keeping tour conditions at Force 1–2 Beaufort for most of the season. In the event of deteriorating weather, guides carry VHF radios and have a direct line to the regional maritime rescue coordination centre CROSS Étel. Advance booking is advised for July and August.
