Grande Plage, Biarritz

Biarritz's iconic Grande Plage stretches in a graceful arc along the heart of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques coastline, backed by the grand Casino municipal and overlooked by the legendary Hôtel du Palais. The beach runs roughly 500 metres of fine golden sand with a consistent Atlantic surf, making it equally suited to serious surfers in the early morning and to families later in the day when the lifeguards are on station. The sand is golden and firm underfoot at low tide, transitioning to softer texture near the waterfront. Water colour ranges from deep blue on clear summer days to a turbulent green-grey during autumn swells. The Grande Plage faces due west and receives the full force of westerly swell rolling in across the Bay of Biscay. Morning conditions are typically the cleanest before the afternoon sea breeze develops. Surf schools line the beach from June through September, and Biarritz's surf culture is visible everywhere — from painted beach cabins to international competitions held on this stretch of sand. Beach volleyball courts and sunbathing zones are sectioned off from the surf corridor. Sunbed and parasol rental is available throughout the season from wooden booths along the upper beach. Beach bars and the Casino's beachfront café terrace provide refreshments without leaving the sand. Public showers and toilet facilities are positioned at each end of the beach. City buses from central Biarritz serve the beach directly, and on-street parking is available on the Boulevard du Général de Gaulle, though spaces fill quickly in July and August. Lifeguards are posted from mid-June through mid-September, typically 10:00–19:00, with a colour-coded flag system indicating safe swimming zones. The beach's central location makes it one of the most accessible strands in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, with the old port, the Rocher de la Vierge rock arch, and the Marché des Halles covered market all within easy walking distance.
