Gorges de l'Aveyron

The Gorges de l'Aveyron form a dramatic limestone canyon carved by the Aveyron River through the Quercy Blanc and Rouergue plateau on the border between the Tarn-et-Garonne and Aveyron departments, reachable as a day excursion from Nouvelle Aquitaine's Dordogne and Lot valleys.

Wild limestone gorge along the Aveyron River with medieval villages and cliffside castles

The gorge stretches approximately 40 kilometres between Montricoux in the west and Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the east, passing through a landscape of sheer golden limestone cliffs, oak woodland, vine terraces, and medieval villages that cling to the cliff faces or occupy river bends. Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val is the gorge's most rewarding base—an exceptionally well-preserved medieval town with a 12th-century mansioned town hall (the oldest civil building in France), covered market squares, and a film heritage that includes its use as the village in the 2010 film The Hundred-Foot Journey. The cliffside village of Bruniquel, accessible from the west of the gorge, occupies a dramatic promontory with two medieval châteaux above the Aveyron-Vère confluence; its cave (Grotte de Bruniquel) contains Neanderthal-built circular stone structures 176,000 years old, accessible on guided tours. Kayaking the 40-kilometre gorge from Montricoux to Saint-Antonin is the classic summer experience—rental companies in Saint-Antonin organize multi-day paddles with riverside camping. Cycling the gorge road (D115/D958) is also spectacular, with low traffic and cliff-face routes through riverside hamlets. The cliffs above Saint-Antonin provide one of the best via ferrata routes in the south-west.

The via ferrata and kayaking activities require good mobility. The Grotte de Bruniquel guided tour involves walking on uneven cave terrain.
