Collonges-la-Rouge

Collonges-la-Rouge, a village in the Corrèze department of Nouvelle Aquitaine, is one of the most visually distinctive settlements in France—built entirely from a deep red-brown sandstone that lends the village its name and gives the streets a vivid, unified warmth entirely unlike any other historic village in France. The geological peculiarity responsible is a local Triassic sandstone streaked with iron oxides, which glows from pale amber in morning light to rich crimson at sunset. The village was established as a free town in the 12th century under the protection of the Viscounts of Turenne, and its prosperity during the medieval period is legible in the turreted manor houses and Gothic-Romanesque church that crowd the main street. The 12th-century church of Saint-Pierre features twin belfries and a carved tympanum over the portal depicting the Ascension—the most intact Romanesque sculpture in the Corrèze. The covered market hall (halle), with its wooden columns and open sides, occupies the heart of the village. During summer, roses climb the sandstone walls of the manors, softening the architecture's martial character. Shops sell walnut products, foie gras, and Corrèze specialties. The village is compact—the main circuit on foot takes around 90 minutes—but most visitors linger for two to three hours, exploring side lanes and the views from the upper church terrace. Collonges-la-Rouge is a founding member of the Plus Beaux Villages de France association, which was created here in 1982. The village is most crowded on summer weekend afternoons; early mornings before 9 AM and late afternoons after 5 PM reward with dramatically lit, crowd-free streets.
