Cité du Vin, Bordeaux

The Cité du Vin at 134 Quai de Bacalan in Bordeaux is the world's foremost museum of wine culture, housed in one of the most dramatic contemporary buildings in France. The structure, designed by XTU architects and opened in 2016, rises from the redeveloped Bassins à Flot waterfront in a sweeping spiral form that evokes both a swirling wine glass and the fluid movements of the Garonne below. Inside, 20 permanent themed modules on three levels take visitors on an immersive journey through wine's global cultural footprint—from the vineyards of antiquity to modern wine tourism—using tasting stations, tactile displays, video booths, and sensory smell labs rather than conventional display cases. Highlights include a recreated Bordeaux négociant's cellar, a virtual hot-air balloon flight over the world's wine regions, and a module dedicated to wine and the arts. The visit culminates at the Belvédère on the 8th floor—a glass-walled panoramic tasting bar where admission includes a glass chosen from a rotating selection of wines from across the globe, with 360-degree views over Bordeaux, the Garonne, and the surrounding wine country. The Cité du Vin also operates a wine shop, a restaurant, and hosts regular rotating exhibitions, concerts, and tasting masterclasses. The building's waterfront location connects naturally to the redesigned Bassins à Flot neighborhood, with contemporary art installations, street food markets, and the Submarine Base cultural venue nearby. A visit to the permanent exhibitions takes two to three hours; the Belvédère tasting is worth an additional 30 to 45 minutes. Weekday mornings are the quietest times to visit, particularly outside July and August.
