Hôtel du Lagon is a small hotel in Kounbani, a coastal village in central Grande-Terre roughly midway between Mamoudzou to the north and Bouéni to the south. The property takes its name from its position on the western coast of the island, which faces Mayotte's inner lagoon — one of the largest and most biologically diverse coral-reef lagoons in the world. Rooms and bungalows are simply furnished with air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, and terrace or balcony access; lagoon-facing units benefit from a consistent westerly breeze that provides natural ventilation in the mornings. The on-site restaurant serves lunch and dinner with a menu leaning on the day's fresh catch and Mahorais-influenced Creole preparations including coconut-based fish curries and grilled shellfish. There is no spa or pool; the primary outdoor experience is the lagoon itself, accessible from a small sandy area in front of the property. Kounbani is a quiet fishing village and the hotel has a genuinely local atmosphere — less urban than Mamoudzou and less tourism-saturated than the N'Gouja beach area in the south. Guests with a rental vehicle can reach Mamoudzou in under an hour and the volcanic peak of Bénara — Mayotte's highest point at 660 metres and a popular hiking destination — in a similar timeframe. The hotel suits independent travellers and diving enthusiasts who prefer a quieter central base with direct lagoon access, without paying the premium of the southern beach properties.
