The night turtle nesting watch at N'Gouja beach, near Kani-Keli on the southwest coast of Grande-Terre, lets visitors observe green turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. Mayotte is a French overseas department in the Comoros archipelago and one of the most important nesting areas for green turtles in the western Indian Ocean. Peak nesting runs from June to October, and the best viewing takes place after dark, over two to four hours. The activity has no fitness requirement beyond walking on soft sand at night, and it is generally suitable for children able to stay quiet and calm. Visitors can join a self-guided watch for free or a supervised watch, offered through the Mayotte Tourisme office or the NGO Oulanga Na Nyamba, for about €15 per person. Supervised watches are strongly preferable, since guides know how to approach nesting females without disturbing them. Equipment is minimal: a red-light torch, because white light disturbs and disorients turtles, insect repellent, dark clothing and a warm layer for after 22:00 when the breeze can cool the beach. Rules protect the animals, including no flash photography, no touching, a respectful distance, staying behind the turtle and keeping quiet. Safety involves walking in groups, watching for uneven sand, holes and tide lines, and keeping a charged phone; the nearest emergency services are reached from Mamoudzou. The beach has no lifeguard service at night, so swimming is discouraged. Sightings are not guaranteed, and some nights pass without a turtle emerging. The strongest chances come at high tide on calm, dark nights without a full moon, and outside June to October, the watch is much less likely to produce results. Visitors staying nearby, such as at the Jardin Maore eco-lodge, can reach the beach on foot.
