Grand-Rivière sits at the literal end of the coastal road on Martinique's northern tip, a fishing village hemmed in by the mountains of the Pitons du Carbet massif on one side and the Atlantic-meets-Caribbean currents on the other. The drive itself, along the narrow, cliff-hugging D10 from Le Prêcheur, is a big part of the experience — it's slow, one-lane-in-places driving with drop-offs and sea views the whole way. The village at the end feels genuinely remote for an island this size, which is the point of going.

Highlights

  • The D10 coast road from Le Prêcheur to Grand-Rivière — a narrow, winding cliff road with repeated Atlantic and Caribbean sea views, part of the destination rather than just the way there
  • Grand-Rivière's black-sand beach — where the village's small gommier and yole fishing boats are pulled up on the sand rather than kept in a harbour
  • Views across the Dominica Channel toward Dominica — visible from the village on clear days, underscoring how far north you've come
  • Anse Couleuvre trailhead area, near Le Prêcheur — a starting point for coastal hiking along the same stretch of coast, for those who want to walk rather than just drive it
