The Mont Sainte-Odile and Mur Paien loop is a short ridge walk in the Bas-Rhin department of Alsace, in the Grand Est region of France, starting and finishing at the Abbaye du Mont Sainte-Odile above Ottrott. The convent, founded around the seventh century and dedicated to Saint Odile, the patron saint of Alsace, stands on a sandstone spur at about 763 m and is the most visited pilgrimage site in the region. Access is by road from Strasbourg in roughly 45 minutes via Obernai, where the D426 climbs through forest to a car park beside the convent. Visitors without a car can take a TER Fluo Grand Est train to Obernai and continue by taxi, since no regular public transport reaches the summit. The loop covers about 6 km with roughly 150 m of climb, so it sits at the easy end of Vosges walking. The surface is a mix of forest dirt paths, root-crossed sections and worn sandstone steps, with some stretches that turn muddy and slippery after rain. Tree cover is heavy on the forest sections, while the terrace of the convent is fully open and exposed to wind. The main landmark is the Mur Paien, or Heidenmauer, a prehistoric wall of roughly 10 km that encircles the summit plateau. Its stone blocks were once joined with wooden tenons, and sections up to about 1.6 m thick can still be seen beside the path. Waymarks of the Club Vosgien, painted on trees and rocks, guide the route. Viewpoints from the convent terrace look east over the Alsace plain toward the Rhine and the Black Forest, and on clear days the Strasbourg cathedral spire can be picked out. Sensible turn-around points are the wall viewpoints, which shorten the walk to about 3 km. Water is not reliably available along the forest trail, so visitors normally carry their own; the convent site has a shop and a refreshment offer, and the buildings provide shelter in bad weather. There is no mountain hut on the loop itself. The summit is also a popular stop for cyclists and coach groups, so weekends in summer can be busy around the convent while the wall sections remain quieter.

- Carry water from Obernai or Strasbourg; the forest sections have no reliable refill points.
- Visit on a clear weekday morning for the best views and quieter paths.

- Bring a light layer; the exposed terrace at about 763 m is cooler and windier than the plain.
When to visit

Accessibility
The convent terrace and the area around the car park are largely level and can be reached with a wheelchair or stroller. The forest loop along the Mur Paien has roots, steps and uneven ground and is not suitable for wheelchairs or standard strollers.
